Carla Hool: The One Casting Director Every Latino Should Know

Who is Carla Hool?

Casting Director Carla Hool has been fighting to get more Latin actors and actresses on the big screen for over 12 years. In 2007, Hool noticed that the small number of casted Latin actors almost always play stereotypical roles of “the cholo gangster” or “the gardener.” And the fact still remains that in 2016 only 2.7% of actors in popular films were Latin. Since then, Hool has run one of Mexico’s first casting agencies and continues to push for more recognition of Latin talent.

Since then, Hool has changed the lives of many talented actors and actresses. For instance, she helped to get Paulina Gaitán into the hit Netflix series Narcos, where Gaitán plays the main character Pablo Escobar’s wife. Ever since Hool helped Gaitán to become one of the most loved actors in Narcos, Gaitán has been able to continue starring in more films and series, and she is continuing to advance in her career. Hool continues to search for underrated Latino talent and helps to connect them with breakthrough opportunities.

What’s next?

And for some more good news, Hollywood is finally catching on to the Latin market. The Mexican-culture-inspired Coco (2017) has made over $807 Million and has become Mexico’s largest blockbuster of all time. The previously mentioned Narcoshas become one of Netflix’s most popular shows, and completed 3 seasons, and has now lead to the new Netflix series Narcos: Mexico.

Hool continues to push for more diversity in her casting work, but she admits that her power is limited. Hool urges that Hollywood continue to not only give more Latin actors and actresses chances, but also white-Latinos, and Afro-Latinos. However, there is no doubt that she is helping many Latin actors/actresses get the chances they need. And hopefully, Hool’s efforts will inspire more directors to recognize the potential of Latin talent.
