A lot of women have textured hair, specially us Latinas! And by textured hair, I mean anything from light waves to the smallest and tightest of curls. Being unapologetically you is very ‘in’ these days, and that includes loving the hair you were born with. I always say that Mother Nature was not wrong when she made you, so why fight her? Instead, try to embrace the beautiful personality of your hair.
Need some help? Try these three tips:
- Alternate between washing your hair with shampoo and then just conditioner. This is going to be a process, but a well worth it one. Skip using shampoo and wash your hair with only conditioner to transform the texture and quality of your curls. A lot of us fight with frizzy, damaged, and random curls because of all the straightening and chemicals we have put on our hair throughout the years. Let’s take it back to basics! And, if you use organic products, even better. Just be sure to detangle before washing, and refrain from brushing afterwards.
- Put down the blow dryer and flat iron. Try air drying your hair as much as possible. Heat can strip moisture away, and slowly but surely make your hair look and feel dry and brittle. This, in turn, causes breakage and cranky women on bad hair days. If you have to reach for the hair dryer, make sure to use a heat protectant and start getting acquainted with your diffuser. And, if you want to create your own pretty waves, try air drying your hair in a bun or braid.
- Use products that target curls! This sounds obvious, but there are SO MANY great products out there to help define and smooth curls. Most of them don’t require any kind of heat styling: just wash, apply, air dry, and go! These products come hundreds of brands and at hundreds of different price points, so start doing some research and find the ones that work the best for your hair and lifestyle. A little trial and error might be necessary at first, but once you find a product you like you’ll be set. If you want a solid recommendation, you can start by trying Suave Professionals’ new Luxe Style Infusion Curl Defining Gel Serum or their Soft Touch Curl Mousse.
If you need more convincing to start letting your hair run wild and free, think about the laid back summer days ahead when beachy waves will most certainly make their yearly comeback.
