Guess What Showtime Original Now Includes Mexican-American Folklore?

Showtime will revive the television series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels centering Mexican-American folklore and rich Los Angeles history.

A spin-off is underway for the Showtime horror series. The original series, Penny Dreadful, came to an end about three years ago after a three-season run from 2014-2016. The spin-off will not be related to the original series nor continue to follow the storylines.

In City of Angels, the characters are described as a “spiritual descendant” of the characters from the original. The show is set in 1930s Los Angeles versus the London setting in the original.

The show will center traditions of Mexican-American folklore and the rise of radio evangelism. LAPD detective Tiago Vega, played by Daniel Zovatto, investigates murders that reflect the rich history of Los Angeles. It will be a combination of supernatural and the combustible reality of the period.

John Logan will be returning to the series as creator, writer and executive producer of Penny Dreadful. “We will now be grappling with specific historical a real-world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same,” Logan said regarding the return of the series.

Also cast for the series include Johnathan Nieves, who will play Mateo Vega, Tiago’s younger brother. Jessica Garza will play Josefina and the youngest of the Vega family.
