Song of the Week: “Greenlight” by Pitbull

Pitbull has been a household name for over a decade now. Real name Armando Christian Pérez, he began his career primarily doing reggaeton, latin hip hop, and crunk before he rebranded himself as a rapping pop artist. His song “Greenlight” featuring Flo Rida and LunchMoney Lewis is an underappreciated hit that we feel should get a lot more love. Hitting number 95 on the “Billboard Hot 100,” it was the main theme song for WWE’s Wrestlemania 33 and was also featured on an episode of the show “Lucifer.”

The song itself hits all the right vibes. It’s namesake refers to going ahead to have the time of your life. It mentions how you only live once and while you can’t be partying all the time (hence “red light” lyric), when you get the green light you go all out. LunchMoney Lewis’ hook in the song is amazing at changing the hype party beat into a chill party beat. While the rest of the song raps to get people hyped for a night the won’t forget, LunchMoney Lewis chills the song out with his smooth singing. It feels akin to taking a breather off the dance floor and using the moment to appreciate what you’re doing.

When it comes to a special night on the town, few songs get the vibe as perfect as this one. It is practically the theme music for the term “YOLO.’
