Filled with glitz, passion, and música, Premio Lo Nuestro certainly lived up to its expectations. The event aired on Univision and was the biggest Latin music award show of the season, racking up 8.9 million viewers during its three-hour duration. Thursday, February 19th, was a busy night for the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida, as this hot spot for award shows and beauty pageants (ahem, Miss Universe) geared up for this awards extravaganza.
So here’s the breakdown:
The magenta carpet saw a slew of stunning outfits. Some of this year’s weirdest garments were donned by Selenis Leyva from “Orange is the New Black,” Becky G, Osmel Sousa, Ximena Córdoba, Perez Hilton, Ricky Martin, and Leslie Grace. Leslie Grace wore a dress that looked like it belonged right alongside all of the horrible quinceañera dresses sported at my high school. And Ricky Martin, well… First off – Hold your fire! – let me explain his ensemble being labeled a fashion mishap. He sported an all-brown getup, which was a big no no. Don’t get me wrong, the suit looked fabulous and his face looked even better, but the brown made him look strikingly similar to a chiseled gopher. Personally, I believe that Ricky Martin looks amazing in all the colors of the rainbow, so why not mix and match instead picking this monochromatic scheme?
Thalía, Galilea Montijo, Maite Perroni, Chiquis Rivera, Chiquinquirá Delgado, Marc Anthony and Shannon de Lima wore the fiercest outfits of the night. But I have to mention that my favorites were definitely Marc Anthony and Shannon de Lima. The power couple matched without being cliché, effectively giving the impression that they were supermodels.
The hosts were Galilea Montijo and Cristián de la Fuente. The performers included a plethora of duets and magnificent voices. Pitbull and Gente de Zona got the party started, opening the show. Thalía and Becky G performed Como Tu No Hay Dos, and it was fabulous. Towards the end of the performance, many said that it looked like Thalía tried to kiss Becky G, who turned her head and rejected the besito. This forced Thalía to give her an awkward kiss on the head in its place. If you ask me, it looked like Becky G was denying a kiss on the forehead, not the lips, but what do I know. Like many other Latino award shows, Premio Lo Nuestro was very performance heavy, as it should be. The magnificent lineup of performers also included Prince Royce, J Balvin and Sean Paul, Camila, Juanes, Maná, Juan Luis Guerra, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, among others. Roberto “Chespirito” Gómez Bolaños, who passed away November 28th, 2014, was remembered in a touching tribute. He was a beloved entertainer in the Latino world, and will be sorely missed.
This years winners talked a lot about unity. Marc Anthony won the Tropical Salsa Artist of the Year award, and said that all Latinos come from different places but are united as one. Enrique Iglesias won Pop Album of the Year and had similar sentiments. And, of course, Romeo Santos won the big award of the night, taking home the Premio Lo Nuestro Artist of the Year award.
