“Journey of a Female Comic” is an inspirational film for people of all races, genders, and backgrounds. It centers on Melendez’s life growing up in the Dominican Republic, being raised by a single mother, the challenges she faced pursuing the American Dream in the U.S. and the numerous achievements that have captured the imagination and admiration of her well-established fan base. Never forgetting or denying her humble beginnings, Melendez has drawn inspiration from multiple figures in her life, especially her mother to whom she dedicates her success.
“This film is hilarious, heartfelt and honest,” says Melendez. “Although I’ve had many setbacks in Hollywood, I’ve been living the American Dream, while staying true to my roots. Anyone who has a dream will relate to this film and be inspired by it. This film will show you how you have to follow your heart, but take your brain with you, by producing your own content.”
In 1996, Melendez became one of the first female morning-Latina leads in Los Angeles radio, becoming the longest running all-female comedy show, The Hot Tamales Live! The show created a new brand – for women in comedy – and we see her evolve as a producer while she attempts to create Spanish-language stand-up comedy as an organized circuit in America.
The feature began as an experimental short film, which premiered at the DR Global International Film Festival. It also opened at Miami’s Hispanicize Film Showcase and The Broadway International Film Festival in 2012, where it represented the U.S. and won “Best Documentary”.
AMC’s Independent program added the 88-minute version to its slate following an enthusiastic reception at test screenings.
