La Nueva Ola or The New Wave of Spanish speaking films from Mexico, Spain and Cuba will be playing from December 3-7, 2014 during the GALA’s Annual Film Festival in Washington, DC.
The new wave of film lineup includes:
The 2012 Seville Film Festival winner for Best Documentary, MAPA (MAP), directed by León Siminiani. This is the story of a young director who travels to Indian to search for his first feature film after being let go from a TV job only to realize that the story is back home. This documentary is a fresh and funny contemplation of love, life, and filmmaking.
Los Insolitos Peces Gatos (The Amazing Catfish), directed by Claudia Sainte-Luce, starring Lisa Owen, Ximena Ayala & Sonia Franco. This international film festival award winning film is a heartwarming tale of two unique women who bond while recuperating in a hospital and whose lives become intertwined as one bonds with the other’s children.
Juan De Los Muertos (Juan of the Dead), directed by Alejandro Brugués, starring Alexis Díaz de Villegas & Jorge Molina. This award winning film is a zombie comedy and satire with the subtext of the Cuban Revolution. Juan is initially convinced that the attack is another stage of the Revolution, but when he realizes that the attackers are zombies and killing them is an acquired skill, he decides to make some money from it…and thus a business is born.
