The Latin classic, Oye Como Va, was reinvented by Carlos Santana’s soulful guitar. It’s largely due to him that the song became a pillar of Latin Rock in the United States. Though the song was originally created by Tito Puente in 1963, it reached new heights in 1970, thanks to Santana’s reinterpretation, simultaneously catapulting him into stardom. In Santana’s capable hands it reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in no time.
The phrase “oye como va” in this tune, can be translated as, “Hey, how’s it going?” However, the first sentence is “Oye como va mi ritmo” which translates to “Listen to how my rhythm goes,” giving this popular tune a double meaning. Since Santana sunk his teeth into it, Oye Como Va has been covered by a wide variety of Latin musicians; from Celia Cruz to Cheo Feliciano to Julio Iglesias. But none of them have exceeded the incredible standard set by Santana back in the 70s.
