NBC’s ‘Abby’s’ Stars Bi-Sexual Latina Lead
Latina actress, Natalie Morales, is set to star in the NBC Comedy Abby’s as a Latina bi-sexual.
Talk about breaking barriers, first, it was Elena from One Day at a Time, who explored her sexuality on the Latino sitcom and now it is Abby. Played by Natalie Morales, who you may recognize from Parks and Recreation, Abby is breaking one barrier at a time.
The series centers around a former marine who now runs a neighborhood bar located in her own backyard in San Diego, California. She also battles shaking off a landlord, played by Nelson Franklin, who cites why the venture is in fact illegal.
Why is this a big deal? This is a Latina lead role in a show and she’s queer! “..I think it is a huge, huge deal to have a lead character of a television show be bisexual on the show and especially the fact that the show isn’t about that…” Morales shared.
NBC premiered the show on Thursday, March 28 and it is set for a 10-episode season. Also cast in the series is Neil Flynn, Jessica Chaffin, Kimia Behpoornia and Leonard Ouzts. Michael Schur and Malmuth will serve as executive producers and Brigitte Munoz-Liebowitz as supervising producer.
Not only is Morales making a name for herself in front of the camera, but she is also familiar with working behind a camera as well. She is a director of numerous short films and even worked on Battle of the Sexes.
