Latino Comedy One Day at a Time Releases 3rd Season
At this point in time, we all know that Netflix has quite the arsenal of quality original programming behind it, but with so much to choose from, finding the right thing to watch can be hard. Well, Netflix’s One Day at a Time is definitely one show you don’t want to miss out on. The show is based on the 1975 Norman Lear sitcom of the same name, only this time, the cast is reimagined to be all Latino.
One Day at a Time follows the everyday life of the Alvarez’s, a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles. The premise of the show is this: Single mother, Penelope Alvarez (played by Justina Machado) is a former nurse for the US Army who relocates to LA for work. In LA, she raises her two children with the help of her grandmother (played by the incredible Rita Moreno). It’s that simple. And yet, One Day at a Time manages to be incredibly complex as it deals with topics like PTSD, sexism, religion, sexuality, dictatorship, and immigration. As a production, it’s unabashedly Latino, never shying away from portraying Cuban culture or addressing important issues that Latinos in the United States face.
The show is all about its characters, focusing on how each member of the Alvarez family discovers their true path in life. It’s refreshingly wholesome and incredibly real, servicing as the perfect feel-good show for all ages. Upon release, One Day at a Time was praised for how it manages to balance comedy with heavy topics. The performances from Justina Machado and Rita Moreno were also the topics of high acclaim. In 2017, it was listed as one of the best shows of the year, topping several big-name critics’ lists.
Season 3 is no different so far as critics are coming out of the woodwork to praise the production. One critic even went as far as to say that One Day at a Time is the best sitcom on TV.
