After participating in Miss Universe in 2006, Valerie Dominguez set off on a rich film and television career that has led her to become a household name around the world. From telenovelas and reality shows to serious film projects like her latest motion picture, Do You Believe?, Valerie proves time and time again that she has more than enough passion and talent to go around.
We were lucky to sit down with her and discuss her role in the film, as well as the journey that led her there in the first place. Her vivacious charm won us over, and we’re sure that you’ll feel the same.
How did you get into Beauty Pageants in the first place?
Life, I guess. I had been asked to participate for four consecutive years, but I didn’t accept because I was finishing up my studies in Italy. Towards the end of that they asked one last time, so I decided why not give it a chance?
Looking back, how do you feel about your Miss Universe experience in 2006? What did you learn from it?
It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
What was the most surprising part of participating in the pageant?
It wasn’t the experience people usually picture of women being petty or mean fighting over the title. I had the chance to share that opportunity with a wonderful group of girls from different countries, and to learn from their cultures along the way.
How do you feel about having Miss Colombia win this year? Have you met Paulina?
We are all so excited to have a beautiful, but also smart and kind, person representing Colombians. Paulina is from my hometown, Barranquilla, which is now widely known for giving birth to sizzling, amazing women such as Shakira and Sofia Vergara.
After participating in Miss America, you began acting. How did you make the transition into telenovelas?
As Miss Colombia, right after arriving from Miss Universe, I was asked to participate in a special celebrity edition of Colombian X Factor for charity. I accepted the challenge, and the show was a total hit, which led to several acting offers. When I started auditioning I discovered my true passion was acting. My first gig was in a show developed by Fernando Gaitan, the showrunner and creator of the original Ugly Betty. It was a great experience!
What’s next for you? Can you give us any spoilers into upcoming projects?
Do You Believe? is my most recent project. It’s a feature film about faith, and how it plays a very important role in our lives. Elena, my character, is a very caring, loving, and hardworking nurse who would do anything for her family. She wants the best for her children, husband, and her patients. Elena and her husband, Bobby, have different religious beliefs. He is very devoted to his faith in Jesus Christ, while she is not as devoted as he is, which causes conflict throughout the film.
We’ve heard your Shakira’s cousin. Are you close?
Yes, we’re related. We don’t hang out regularly, but I’m a big fan and proud of everything she’s accomplished.
How do you stay close to your roots?
With coffee and passion! I have a big Colombian coffee every morning, and when it comes to soccer I don’t miss a game.
What’s your current guilty-pleasure tv show?
How I Met Your Mother.
Thank you so much!
