“On Tuesday, November 11th, Unity Health Care hosted an event highlighting a $10,000 donation provided by The Walmart Foundation. The donation, which will provide 1,000 children with backpacks full of school supplies, was acknowledged at Unity’s Minnesota Avenue Health Center located in Ward 7 – one of the District of Columbia’s most under-resourced communities.
Unity Health Care, Inc. (Unity) is a non-profit organization that has, for nearly three decades, provided quality, accessible and affordable health care for the uninsured, underinsured, homeless and working poor residents of our nation’s capital. Each year, Unity provides care for more than 105,000 men, women and children who are in need more than 20,000 of whom are children. “We are committed to the success of this program and the educational rewards that our children see as a result of its success,” commented Vincent Keane, President and CEO of Unity Health Care. “This program is another way we put our mission in action. We are thankful for the generous support of our partners at Walmart, who help us “promote healthier communities” one child at a time.” Keane added.
Currently, approximately 80,000 school-aged children live in the District of Columbia. As the city’s largest healthcare provider of safety net healthcare services, Unity provides 10% of those children (or approximately 8,000 children ages 5 – 18 years old) with school physicals and immunizations to ensure that they can return to school. The goal of Unity’s initiative reaches beyond providing physicals and immunizations – but strives to move families toward a preventive approach to health care. Toward this end, Unity has partnered with Walmart and other corporate partners to provide DC school-aged children with backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies throughout the year as an incentive for taking a proactive role in the health and wellness of their children.”
“Walmart is happy to support Unity Health Care; Unity is committed to caring for our children and has been on the front lines of promoting healthier communities for everyone in the nation’s capital for nearly 30 years,” said Nina Albert, Director of Community Affairs at Walmart. “Walmart values strong partnerships with not-for-profit organizations throughout the DC area that are doing remarkable work every day to improve the lives of local residents.”
