7 Shocker Afro-Latino Celebrities
You may recognize the faces on this list but it may surprise you that these celebrities are Afro-Latino. From football players to singers and actors this is our list of seven Afro-Latino celebrities.
1 Dascha Polanco
Since the start of her career, Polanco has always stood firm in her Afro-Latino roots. The Dominican actress began her career with her role in the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black. In an interview with The Breakfast Club, she stated, “we’re talking about where you’re from, your country, and you’re talking about race/ethnicity, right? So I am Afro-Latina.”
2 Amara La Negra
As an Afro-Latina singer of Dominican decent it seems she has had to defend her Latina heritage since the start of her career. Her storyline within Love and Hip Hop Miami entails colorism and eurocentrism that exist within the Latin community.
3 Christina Milian
You may recognize the Cuban-American actress and singer from her singles in the early 2000s or from the 2003 box office hit, Love Don’t Cost a Thing. “I’m Cuban but people didn’t get it because I was also brown-skinned. Latinos come in all colors and shades..” she shared.
4 Joan Smalls
If you remember, Joan Smalls was also on our list of Latina supermodels, and yes, she’s Afro-Latina. The model was born in Hatillo, Puerto Rico and even went to the Inter American University of Puerto Rico before she moved to New York and began her career.
5 Gina Torres
Actress Gina Torres is well known from her appearances in films such as I Think I Love My Wife, alongside Chris Rock. She also starred in the USA Network television series Suits. The NYC born actress comes from two parents who are of multiracial Cuban decent.
6 Victor Cruz
If you’re a football fan, you may know Victor Cruz who won the Super Bowl XLVI with the New York Giants in 2012. The retired, New Jersey-born football player has a Puerto Rican mother and an African-American father.
7 Miguel
R&B mixed with funk and rock, that’s the combination of vibes singer Miguel brings to the table with his tracks. What you may have not known about the Los Angeles-born artist is that his mother is African-American and his father is Mexican-American.
