é: Tell us about your upbringing – where are you from, how your childhood affected your work, why you were interested in sending your play over to us at Latin é.
Angelica Rosa: I was born and raised in the Bronx, in the housing projects. My family from both my father’s and my mother’s side are all from Puerto Rico. My father’s side is from Naguabo, and Carolina, Puerto Rico. My mother’s side is from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
My maternal Puerto Rican grandmother and my Cuban God Father (who was my maternal grandmother’s husband) raised me. They are, and were, the best. Even though certain things around me were sometimes sad. They showed me how to turn things around and make good out of everything. They showed me about the real world and the spiritual world. The reason for me sending information about my book to you is to let people know how one simple incident could change everyone’s life around you. I also feel that Latin è seems so real, and I love that you want to connect with Latinos everywhere. I got a positive vibe. No imitations.
é: What made you want to be a playwright?
Rosa: I love writing. I love going into another world, and bringing it into our world. Life inspires me to write.
é: Tell us more about The Death of Lolita. What was your inspiration?
Rosa: The inspiration for me to write the book, “The Death of Lolita” (which is my third book ) was the world around me. This book talks a little bit about every problem. From cancer, gangs, project life, sexual harassment, etc. Also, it’s about how family sticks together when times get hard. My inspiration is also my children and my future grandchildren. I want each generation to follow their dreams and achieve their goals.
é: What’s next for you in 2014?
Rosa: I will be releasing my fourth book this year 2014. It is called “Messages” and it’s a poem/story book. I am also working on a children’s book and a short novel. I’m also trying to see if the Hallmark channel might pick up the story “The Death of Lolita” and make it into a short movie.
é: Anything to say to your fans?
Rosa: To all the people who believe in me and support me with their positive thoughts, I thank you. I’m going to keep on working hard and echando palante (moving forward). Also, never give up on your dreams.
é: And, just for fun: If you could revisit any moment in history, what moment would you choose and why?
Rosa: I would revisit the 1950’s. Even though I wasn’t born yet, I have always been interested in that decade. It was a time in my family when there was a lot of family unity. People watched out for each other. Spanish music was amazing. People really worked hard, and had fun.
