‘The First Rule of Punk’ to be Adapted into a Musical
“The First Rule of Punk,” is an award-winning book centering a Mexican-American girl and it is now becoming a musical.
Author, Celia C. Perez, released the book back in 2017. During her first day of middle school, 12-year-old Malú quickly runs into challenges with dress code, her punk rock look and the cool girls in school. In the process of her frustration, her father encourages her with the first rule of punk: be yourself.
Last month it was announced that the Children’s Theatre Company, which is the largest and most acclaimed theatre for youth, will be turning the book into a musical. The production will feature select songs from the BMG catalog.
The book has won numerous awards in 2018 including the Pura Belpré Award, the Great Lakes Award, Great Reads Award, the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Fiction and Poetry Honor.
“It’s such an honor to have ‘The First Rule of Punk’ adapted into a musical by the nation’s leading multi-generational theatre, Children’s Theatre Company and to have BMG and their catalog of iconic artists involved with the production,” Perez shared.
