Fashion | Vanidades Event

Monica Diaz

Growing up, I remember my mom religiously reading Vanidades, the first and most widely read Spanish-Language women’s lifestyle magazine in the United States and Latin America. So you can imagine how excited I was when I was invited to attend the Vanidades Icons of Style event at the Mandarin Oriental last week. The event, hosted by Lili Estefan, celebrated top fashion icons with cocktails and an awards presentation.

I went with friend and fellow guest fashion designer Fabian Molina, who also is a very talented photographer. We had a fashionably fabulous time!

I knew immediately that this was going to be something I wanted to share with everyone. The list of stylish Latino celebrity honorees was impressive.

Carolina Herrera – Iconic Woman of Style

Daisy Fuentes – Mujer Vanidades Ruben Toledo – Icon of Style Award for Fashion Illustration

Edmundo Castillo – Icon of Style Award for Accessory Design

Angel Sanchez – Icon of Style Award for Fashion Design

Nacho Figueras – Icon of Style Award for Sports

Ruben Blades – Icon of Style Award for Music

William Levy – Iconic Man of Style Award.

These are just a few of the celebrities honored. The list of presenters was also quite remarkable.

My main focus, besides getting to meet William Levy, was figuring out what Latinas wear to a big gala that focuses on style?

What I found was that we Latinas are chic and still love black like everyone else. However, color was still the main attraction.

Carolina Herrera Jr. wore a beautiful art deco-inspired yellow sequined Carolina Herrera dress that was as beautiful as Carolina herself. Her mother, the always elegant fashion mogul wore a simple, elegant black sequined cocktail dress with a long strand of pearls. Together they were a picture of classic perfection.

Daisy Fuentes, who is more beautiful in person, wore a midnight blue and black striped slighted beaded cocktail dress. Her Hair and make-up were simple and elegant.

Carolina Alvarez-Mathies, PR director for Angel Sanchez wore the most fabulous blush colored pleated organza Angel Sanchez vintage piece.

There were a few red dresses but the one that I loved because it was fun and flirty was worn by Anette Salinas of Televisa Publishing. It was short with a full skirt and open back.

There was also a very chic grey taffeta blouse paired with black pants worn by accessory designer Sarah Vander Wal.

The best dressed couple was Ruben Toledo and Isabel Toledo. They looked like a gorgeous portrait of timeless elegance.

The men were also quite stylish. William Levy looked sexy, as always, in a classic black tuxedo. Angel Sanchez wore a sleek greyish/blue silk suit paired perfectly with a black shirt. Ruben Blades wore his signature hat with a simple and elegant grey suit and red tie.

It was an evening of true icons and inspirational Latinos showcasing talent and style.

Me? Well…I decided I was going to wear color too. I wore a vintage silk jersey orange little number I had saved for just such an occasion.
