‘Breakthrough’: a Film About a Latino Teen’s Miracle
The new movie, Breakthrough, about a Latino teen who died and came back to life has been released.
The film is based on the true events of an adopted Latino teenager, John Smith, who fell through ice and into Lake Sainte Louise in 2015. Smith ended up with a coma but was ultimately rescued by first responder Tommy Shine. It demonstrates the strong faith that Smith’s parents had in God that John will make it through the tragic event alive.
To tell the story of the then-14-year-old boy is director Roxann Dawson, who you may recognize from Star Trek: Voyager. Cast as John Smith is actor Marcel Ruiz.
After being submerged under the icy water for 15 minutes, medical experts believe the cold temperatures are what allowed John’s organs to remain functioning. However, his parents take a different view and believe that it was a miracle from God.
Smith’s incredible story has even drawn his mother, Joyce Smith, to write her own accounts of the miracle in her book “The Impossible.” Playing Joyce in the movie is This is Us actress, Chrissy Mets. The movie has been released April 17, 2019.
