Mexican Woman Set to Direct Animated Frida Kahlo Film
There is an animated film on the way on the life of Frida Kahlo and guess what? It’s being directed by a Mexican woman!
You may be familiar with the 2002 film Frida, starring Salma Hayek that unraveled the life of the liberated artist. Now there will be an animated version. The excitement doesn’t end there, Mexican-English actress and filmmaker, Paloma Baeza is set to direct the upcoming piece.
The animated film was picked up by the London-based production company, Lupus Films and partnership with Universal Content Group. Paloma Baeza is most known from her first animated film Pole Apart, which won the 2018 BAFTA for best British animated short film. Aside from the Frida animated film she is also working on directing an animation and live-action feature, The Toymaker’s Secret.
“With my Mexican heritage it is particularly meaningful to have this opportunity to explore her deep and complex personality, as well as her relationship with Mexico’s past and its future,” Baeza shared in an interview with Variety.
A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
